About us

The Weedon Almshouses Charity was established by Thomas Weedon on 6 September 1624. It originally consisted of a terrace of four cottages on a plot of land in Waterside to house the poor and vulnerable members of the local community.

The site is enclosed to this day by a high retaining perimeter wall. In the mid 1950's, a block of four flats was built on the northern side of the site, giving a total of eight properties. Each property has a sitting room, bedroom, kitchen and bathroom, and most of them house a single resident. The cottages each have a private rear garden, and the flats have a communal rear plot. The enclosed site in front of the properties is currently maintained as communal gardens.

Today residents are still required to demonstrate that they are in hardship and they are also required to be able to live independently. The Charity is administered by a Clerk on the instruction of the board of Trustees, comprising a Chairman, Honorary Secretary, Honorary Treasurer and ordinary Trustees. It is registered with the Charity Commission (Charity number 208610) and is a member of The Almshouse Association. The cottages, together with the retaining wall is listed Grade-II.

The Weedon Almshouses Charity will be commemorating its 400th anniversary in 2024. It has a five-year programme of improvements and it was recently the recipient of a substantial grant from The Worshipful Company of Cordwainers.
